Hello, my name is Lizzy and I am the creator and founder of Make at 140. Make started its journey as a button shop called Funky Poppy, which sold unusual buttons, button jewellery, gifts and anything made with buttons. It was a great little shop in a touristy part of Plymouth, where people would come year after year to choose from my homemade buttons and jewellery. My love for buttons started when I was a child, playing with my Granny's button tin, which I still have now. You can’t beat a good button - change the buttons on any garment and it makes it look expensive, designer and special!

Starting off with buttons and upcyling, my journey took me into the wonderful world of sewing. I was given a Brother sewing machine for my birthday one year, I got it out the cupboard a couple of times, yet was a little scared by it, so it went back in the cupboard. It stayed there for a good few years, but the need and desire to sew kept coming back.



A while back, I was looking for a new challenge in the button and creative business world - the idea of Make at 140 was born. Combining a shop, café and workshop space where people could learn to sew and other creative things all in one space. That was over four years ago now, and it has been an incredible journey, with ups and downs as any new business has. But the people I have met, have been able to teach, and the community that has been created around the shop make it all worthwhile!

Make has since moved to a new premises after three wonderful years in its original location. We needed to make a change, and the fabulous community of makers and artists at Ocean Studios in Royal William Yard seemed like the perfect fit.

A yummy café already here, the workshop space upstairs providing a perfect space for all of the sewing classes and a new shop front right by the sea. It has been a great move for the business and is allowing us to grow and offer more and more.

A great range of dressmaking fabrics and quilting supplies

The shop has modern dressmaking fabrics and a number of quilting cottons. I'm a big believer in quality supplies like brands such as Atelier Brunette, Lillestoff, Merchant and Mills and Lady McElroy. I have a large selection of modern dressmaking patterns from fabulous indie pattern designers - they are just the best - and I have the largest button selection in the South West!

What's more, visitors can pick from a selection of sewing-related gifts and handmade items and a small haberdashery stock - we aren’t the biggest shop for fabrics, but we do have the best selection of quality and unusual offerings in the local area.

Fun and friendly workshops for Sewists in Devon

We offer a large variety of sewing workshops from beginners' dressmaking, through to more advanced sessions such as sewing your own jeans and overlocker workshops, and we have other ones on offer such as crochet, knitting, arm-knitting and jewellery-making - there really is something for everyone.

If you work in the week, no problem, as we offer lots of the above in the evenings as well as weekends. We can have up to four classes running at once in the same space with a maximum of eight people per class, ensuring plenty of one-on-one help for attendees.

All workshops are held in a wonderfully large workshop space upstairs from our shop. Spacious, light and airy, this space is in a listed building by the sea, making it a fantastic place to unleash your creativity!

A few of our current sewing classes include:

• Beginners sewing class - Ten hours learning the basics, from threading your machine and sewing in a straight line, to making your first garment.
• Sewing with jersey knit - A full day of sewing with jersey fabric, making with the Tilly and the Buttons Coco Dress or the Grainline Lark Tee.
• Learn to love your overlocker – For those who have an overlocker but are scared to use it, this class will send you home confident to use your overlocker on all sorts of fabrics.
• Sew your own jeans – A new listing to our workshops, this is a two-day class that focuses on getting the perfect fit and making your perfect jeans.

A brilliant destination for a crafty day out in Plymouth

Make at 140 is located in Ocean Studios the historic Royal William Yard. Parking is onsite and payable at £1 an hour.

Ocean studios is a collective of artist studios with a pottery studio, jewellery studio and print room, all of which you can visit on most days. On top of that, we have the delicious Column Bakehouse café right down the hall for delicious homemade cakes and lunches, and the Royal William Yard is right on the waterside with a marina, and lots of bars and restaurants with a few indie shops to take a look around - perfect for a crafty day at the seaside.
