I'm forever sewing ruffles! - Jen Walker

Image
Hello again Brother fans! Jen here, from sewing blog The Gingerthread Girl. I just wanted to stop by to spill the beans on my latest adventures with my Brother sewing machine. I have been having a blast up in the sewing room, getting to grips with gathering.  I love how this simple sewing technique takes a straightforward seam, and gives it an oomph of girly ‘flounciness’ - perfect for floating through the summertime in!  The pattern I chose was the Deer & Doe Myosotis dress (version A). I was immediately drawn to the tiered ruffles of the skirt, and those gorgeous sleeves!  I had this lovely linen/viscose blend lilac fabric from Sew Me Sunshine in my stash, and I decided this would make the perfect summer dress. The perfect pairing for this pattern!  When it came to the gathers themselves, I decided to opt for the classic method of sewing 2 rows of long stitches in order to pull and create the gathered-up bunches of fabric along...

Jen Walker's step-by-step guide to French seams

Image
Hello again Brother readers! I thought I’d drop by with another blog post – this time I felt compelled to share my love of the queen of all of the seam finishes – the French seam. If you haven’t come across French seams before, they are used mostly on fabrics which are lightweight, sheer, slippery or fray easily - perfect for all of those floaty, gorgeous, spring and summer makes! The final finish on a French seam will encapsulate the raw edge of fabric and give an oh-so-neat look! Previously, I had avoided using this seam finish as it felt like a lot of hard work when I could easily just use my overlocker to give a nice, clean and professional finish. But I need to tell you that it really is worth that little bit extra effort. You won’t be able to stop staring at the beauty of the inside of your clothes – trust me! Sounds great right? So how do you go about making them? It really is a lot simpler than some people think so please don’t be scared off!  To help, I...

Jen Walker - Hello wedding season, let's get sewing!

Image
Hello sewists! I am thrilled to be back on the Brother blog. This time I am bringing you my latest make – and a very special one at that. As summertime started to peek it’s sunshiney face round the end of Spring, it got me to thinking about all those exciting summery things to come. Including the return of wedding season!  An invitation to a wedding is such a wonderful opportunity to start planning a fancy frock. I just love a wedding – the excitement of getting ready, seeing the happy couple tie the knot, ohh and the flowers, the food, the drink... so many things about weddings that have me all excited! So, when a very beautiful wedding invitation from my friends landed on my doormat earlier this year, I wasted no time in dreaming up this little beauty. The pattern I chose for this make is a Deer & Doe Magnolia Dress (maxi version), and the fabric I used was one I had been eyeing up for some time – a bamboo silk in this stunning ‘saffron’ yellow colour...

Sewing sweatshirts - Jen Walker's favourite patterns this winter

Image
Hello Brother readers! I’m back again with another blog post. This time I *need* to share with you all the sweatshirts I have sewn lately to keep toasty warm this wintertime! At home, I’m the one creeping around the thermostat to knock it up a degree or two – I just feel the cold so much! Unfortunately, I can’t rely on central heating 24/7, which has led me down the road of testing out a number of different sweatshirt patterns to see which I love most. So, I wanted to share with you my thoughts and findings so that you too may embrace the joy of making a cosy sweatshirt! Firstly, I’d like to say how much I love sweatshirts for being a nice, ‘quick-sew’ project. They really don’t take long, so you can enjoy the rewards of making something yourself in super-quick time, especially if, like me, you sew on a speedy, easy-to-use Brother Overclocker 3034DWT! Being a working mum of a toddler, I don’t exactly have much time to myself to sew, so sweatshirt-making on the Brother has been ...
