Wimbledon Sewing Machines reopens their London Sewing Machine Museum.

Wimbledon Sewing Machine Company have reopened their Sewing Machine Museum, on the fist Saturday of every month.

It's a fascinating place located within the Wimbledon Sewing Machine Company on Balham High Road, London. It features around 700 industrial and domestic sewing machines of all makes and ages.

Feature attraction is a machine which was given to Queen Victoria's eldest daughter as a wedding present in 1854. Even back then, no expense was spared in its construction. The machine is covered with ornamental engraving under a silver gilt finish. It has a cut glass cover with Prussian and British royal coats of arms.  The oak treadle is carved with Imperial eagles and, as a reminder of home, the stitch plate is engraved with a view of Windsor Castle. The accessory boxes and instruction manual are bound in blue velvet with gilt brass monograms and even the ivory cotton reels are carved with a crown motif!

The Museum has been featured on Channel 4's "Collectors Lot", ITV's "London Tonight", and also recently when Boy George visited to get his Mother's original Sewing Machine back for Channel 4's "The House That Made Me".

Amongst other antiquities and rareties, the owner Ray Rushton has recreated his original shop front within the museum! A sight to behold in itself.

The museum is currently open on the first Saturday of every month between 2 and 5pm.
