Summertime Sewing – A Tilly and the Buttons Bertha Cardigan
I’m sure everyone can agree, but lately, all I have been dreaming about is the start of Summer. I think we could all do with a bit of sunshine right now! This is why I have been thinking about focusing my sewing on some more seasonally appropriate pieces of clothing, for both indoors and outdoors, and that are maternity friendly.
When I think of Spring and Summer, I get excited by all the vibrant colours. I love seeing pastel colour palettes emerging from the dreary wintertime. However, it still gets a bit chilly out there, so layering your clothing is key. This is the thought process lead me to my most recent make.
I decided to make a warm, casual cardigan, perfect for throwing on over favourite summer outfit. The pattern is the Tilly and the Buttons Bertha, from the new book Make It Simple. And the fabric is a lilac coloured marl sweatshirting, which I happened to stumble across in my local haberdashery, Backstitch (an amazing shop!). It was in the remnants pile, and I fell head-over-heels for the colour instantly. Top tip – it’s always worth checking those remnants for some beautiful bargains!
The really special thing about this project is that it has been entirely sewn on an Overlocker. It was so easy! My Brother 3034DWT Overlocker had absolutely no issues with flying through this make – even when I put it to the test with four layers of fabric! This machine is so reliable, and the stitch quality is always so super neat. I had to adjust the differential feed a little for this fabric, but other than that, it gave a perfect, well-balanced stitch. It definitely helped make this a speedy project too.
The pattern was an absolute breeze – and would be a perfect make for any beginner sewists out there. I made a straight size 4 and it fits just right. No adjustments needed.
This is going to be the perfect garment for throwing on to keep warm, over some cool slogan tees this Spring and Summer. I can just tell I’m going to spend a lot of time wearing this! And maternity-friendly too – win!
So here’s to Spring and summer, sunshine and more sewing!
